AI Made Drug Discovery Nine Months Long — Now Comes the Hard Part

Insilico Medicine used AI to compress drug candidate discovery from four-and-a-half years down to one. Their fastest program hit candidate nomination in nine months — like a human baby, except with a molecular structure instead of screaming.
The trick: generative AI picks targets and designs molecules, then humans in Shanghai test them. CEO Alex Zhavoronkov credits China's research infrastructure, lower costs, and a 30-day regulatory review that makes the FDA look like it's reviewing via carrier pigeon.
The flagship drug, Rentosertib, starts Phase III trials in August 2026. Nobody knows if AI-designed drugs actually succeed more often — Phase I looks great (80–90%), but Phase II sits at 40%, same as old-school pharma. Sample size too small to tell whether AI is brilliant or just faster at arriving at the same coin flip.
Zhavoronkov also mentioned AI and robotics could displace 40% of Insilico's software workforce. Surviving scientists are being retrained to manage the robots replacing them.
