Across eight research projects, coding agents sped up runtimes, fixed crusty build systems, and cranked out ports to Rust, PyTorch, and GPUs like caffeinated interns with commit access. In some cases, tools ran 25x to 60x faster. Great for science, terrifying for anyone emotionally attached to legacy code.
The catch: agents are excellent at writing code and terrible at knowing whether the code is scientifically right. So yes, the bots can rebuild your genomics tool in weeks - but a human still has to make sure it isn’t quietly inventing new biology.
The real lesson is simple: AI can do the plumbing, but somebody still has to own the house.
