Instacart Just Moved In With ChatGPT — and It Brought the Groceries

Instacart and ChatGPT are officially living together — and it’s surprisingly domestic. Thanks to something called the Agentic Commerce Protocol (basically “AI that shops”), you can now chat about dinner plans and actually buy the ingredients without ever leaving the convo.

No app-switching. No lost carts. Just you, the AI, and a suspiciously smooth checkout powered by Stripe.

From “What’s for dinner?” to “Order complete.”

Before this, chatbots would recommend recipes… then politely dump you onto a website to fend for yourself. Instacart fixed that. Now the AI fills your cart based on real local store inventory — no more phantom avocados or imaginary sourdough.

As Nick Turley from OpenAI put it: “AI ideas, real-world results.” In other words: Chat, pay, peace out.

Smart Groceries, Smarter AI

Instacart wasn’t just along for the ride — it actually helped OpenAI test the tech, feeding the AI billions of product data points and real-time stock levels. So when ChatGPT promises ice cream, it’s the kind that actually exists.

Robots Buying You Groceries, Robots Writing the Code

Instacart’s using AI on both fronts. ChatGPT helps you shop; ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex help Instacart’s team work faster behind the scenes. It’s AI all the way down.

Try It Out

The feature’s live on web (mobile apps coming soon). Just type something like “Instacart, help me shop for taco night” into ChatGPT. Boom — chat-based grocery shopping!

Instacart turned ChatGPT into your new grocery buddy. You chat. It shops. Nobody leaves the couch.
