Basware’s New AI Agents Want to Do Your Invoices So You Don’t Have To

Basware has rolled out a new squad of AI agents for its invoice management platform—basically InvoiceAI with caffeine—moving toward what it dramatically calls “Agentic Finance.” That’s corporate-speak for letting AI handle your financial chores while humans pretend to be more strategic.
CEO Jason Kurtz says the future of finance is “near‑perfect, touchless invoice processing.” Translation: AP teams won’t even get to touch invoices anymore, because the bots will beat them to it. Ultimately, Basware wants invoice processing that’s 100% automated, 100% compliant, and 100% protected—presumably unlike the rest of corporate life.
Meet the Finance Bots
The new AI agents plug directly into accounts payable:
• AP Business Agent – your invoice‑whisperer, telling you what to do next.
• AP Data Agent – answers your data questions in normal English, not “Excel‑ese.” Ask things like: “Which invoices are stuck in France?” or “Who gave us discounts and why didn’t we take them?”
The whole point: fewer routine emails, fewer follow‑ups, fewer humans asking, “Hey, did you pay this yet?”
Kurtz claims this frees AP teams to ask “impactful questions.” (Example: “Why are we still using fax machines in 2026?”)
Finance Loves AI… Sort Of
A Basware survey shows 61% of companies are experimenting with AI agents, and 25% admit they have no idea what an AI agent even is. So adoption is growing, but with heavy “please don’t break anything” energy.
The big hesitation? Governance. Finance teams want AI help, but only if humans keep the keys. Basware uses a central policy engine to enforce business rules, compliance, and risk limits—aka “autonomy gates,” because calling them “speed bumps for robots” didn’t sound as fancy.
More Bots Are Coming
Basware is building more agents, including:
• Supplier Agent – handles invoice disputes so humans don’t have to.
• AP Pro Agent – a gen‑AI helper for solving processing puzzles.
Early testers like Billerud, the paper manufacturer, say the AI boosts invoice quality and saves money—basically, a win‑win unless you were emotionally attached to manual data entry.
The Road to Agentic Finance
For finance teams, success depends on:
• how smart the AI actually is
• how clean your invoice data is
• whether business rules make sense to both humans and bots
• how brave you feel letting AI handle your money
Basware’s message is clear: the bots aren’t add‑ons; they’re the future. And they’re here to take your invoices, not your job… probably.
